… is very hard to do.
I’m generally not very good at keeping in touch with friends, especially those who are far away. I believe I still have some email drafts I intended to send since like… 3 years ago? And I’m not only talking about those very long mails with years of life updates to old friends. Some are really just an answer to a “When are you coming back?”. I always told myself, “OK, I’ll send them out tomorrow!”. But in the end, other things always kept me. Oh what a busy life ![]()
Isn’t it ironic? Now more than ever, we have all the communication channels to keep us close: calls, SMSes, emails, chats (even with web cams), the social networking websites… But we simply have no time. Or maybe it’s more like… the world makes it no longer feasible to make communication our top priority?
What is going on here?
Sometimes I wish all inventions stopped after Morse invented telegraph. Don’t you agree that it’s one of the most effective ways to exchange hellos and stories? Short and sweet. Just straight to the core. And no one will get disappointed, because who expects telegrams to be long and detailed anyway? Yeah, I think now I can understand those steampunk enthusiasts. It’s the perfect world!
Now for example, I imagine my telegram exchange with a friend from another continent who plays in a band will be something like this.
Him: WORK GOOD. BAND GREAT. PERSONAL LIFE SUCKS.
Me: WORK SUCKS. VIOLIN SUCKS. PERSONAL LIFE SO-SO. CONGRATS ON BAND.
And we can repeat this every month, hahahah!

I’ve got a friend who plagues people with mercilessly long email updates on her personal life. The recipients of her missives are about 80 people with whom she had some level of acquaintance or friendship back in our undergrad days. That many of these people might have forgotten who she is doesn’t discourage her from sending the emails, which are sometimes harshly parodied and redistributed to the list. I’m guessing that she has seen at least one of these – but it hasn’t stopped her from continuing. (she gets points for having a thick skin). Acquaintances (even good ones) are not the same thing as friends though it takes a while for some people to understand that.
